Period Oak Restoration Projects
Restoration 2
Lord Kitchener’s former estate near Canterbury
We were called upon to carry out a major oak restoration
at the former estate of Lord Kitchener. There is a Jacobean house and
stable block on the estate which had unfortunately not been maintained
for some time. During a period of snow, the stable block roof gave way
pushing the exterior walls outwards and the roof collapsing into the
building. There was a difference of 4 feet from the walls at ground
level to the top.
The first thing to do was
make the structure safe whilst the repair works were carried out. This
estate is of particular historic interest and in preserving this
significant building we worked in partnership with English Heritage and
Canterbury Conservation. We carried all the oak repair and restoration
work in situ as we were advised that we were unable to dismantle the
building. We had to devise several new ways of getting into some of the
lesser accessible positions to work.
It took
around a year of sympathetic craftsmanship returning this stable block
to its former glory. Broom Park is an important part of England’s
heritage and we are very proud to have restored such an important
building.
